HOURS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE/APPRENTICESHIP/INTERNSHIP
EXPLANATION: In the "old days" most educators went to great lengths to make sure that learners put in enough hours to earn their grades. While "time on task" is important, what is more important is that a person comes away from a course with skills and understandings that will help them in life. The apprenticeship system in most guilds and trades required a person to be able to do perform certain skilled actions or produce items of a certain quality before being promoted. These education methods are seen in Johann Amos Comenius (1592-1670), John Milton Gregory in the Seven Laws of Teaching, Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz, expressed by a student as "In the Laboratory with Agassiz." This Council’s points are "hours spend do not an education make," and practical outcomes are what is important. Learning does take time, but practical, life changing results should be the focus.
Clock hours here are to be estimated based on:
- A) The supporting document, e.g. laboratory hours on formal transcripts, attestation of clinical instructor, etc.
- B) estimated clinical hours based on usual work week, e.g. 40 hours per 48 weeks, if engaged in full time practice. The supporting document in this case is a notarized copy of previous business licenses or signed letter from Institution of Employment, e.g. Hospital, Clinic, Out Patient Facility, Hospice, etc.
NOTE: CERTIFICATION UNDER BNMDP-NA IS NOT ACADEMIC DEGREES. POTENTIAL REGISTRANT MUST PROVIDE SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OF EDUCATIONAL STANDING AND MAY BE REQUIRED TO BE SUCCESSSFUL IN CERTIFYING EXAMS TO BE REGISTERED NO EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE.
